Setting Intentions with the New Moon
Have you been thinking about setting new intentions or goals and committing to them? A perfect time to begin setting new intentions or refining prior intentions is with the onset of the New Moon.
Isn’t anytime a good time to set intentions? Sure. But, if you are serious in manifesting what you want or need, you might need or want a little help. The moon’s cycle and energy of each cycle will help us in manifesting our intentions or goals.

When is the New Moon?
It’s important to note that the modern definition and calendar system references the new moon to be when the moon is completely dark. Some of us who align ourselves to the rhythm of the earth and the moon cycle actually say this is the dark moon and has its own significance. You can read about the Dark Moon here.
Therefore, the new moon is actually the first sliver of light after the dark moon. This the beginning of a new moon cycle and symbolizes new beginnings, new intentions, new life.
Setting Intentions in Sync with the New Moon
In the past, agricultural societies planted their crop seedlings by the phases of the moon. Science will even back up the idea of the intelligence of this concept because the new and full moon is when the moisture in the soil is at its highest due to the gravitational pull from the moon. If you want to read about that interesting concept click here.
We all may not be farmers or gardeners but we can still align ourselves with the cycles of the moon. So if you would like to have a little help from the universe in manifesting your desires, the new moon is the perfect time to start the process.
Intention Setting Process
As with anything, there is a detailed way or the casual way of doing or accomplishing things. You can have a detailed involved ritual to set your intentions or just have a simple little ritual.
Here is a simple ritual that is great for anyone to use. It’s great for beginners, for someone who is short on time, and someone who just does things the simple easiest way. That certainly would be me.
I like to write my intentions down on a piece of paper and then gather my ritual materials and head on outside to talk to the moon. For this ritual, you will need only your piece of paper with your intentions written down, sage, incense, and a lighter or match.
- Go outside and sit or stand whichever you prefer.
- Light your sage to clear the space of any negativity.
- Light the incense to symbolize that sacred space has been opened up.
- Take 3 deep breaths.
- Thank the moon and tell her how you appreciate it. Let her know that your intention is to start a manifesting cycle with her energy.
- Give her an offering.
- Then read from your paper.
- Thank her again.
- Sit in appreciation until the incense goes out.
- Save your paper and keep it in sight to remind you of the intention you set.
That’s really all there is to it. Your intentions have been set and the universe now knows it. In the next days and weeks take action steps towards your goals because we need to do our part also. You can reference the article above about the phases of the moon and how to manifest with its cycles.

This was an interesting read. Something I might try. I’m always open to new things and I have some sage leftover and was looking for something to do with it 🙂

You had me at light the sage and burn the incense. I could use those two right now. 🙂

This is awesome. We’ve been spending a lot of time out after dark lately watching NEOWISE and Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto (they are so bright where we live right now).

This is so important to do…moving forward with intention and thought. The new moon, a new year, a new season, a new day, a new week…all great times to do it.

Thank you.
