Introducing Myself to the Spirits of the Land

We found our property! Although it’s not official or final yet, we are definitely getting this piece of land. I thought it would be a good time for introducing myself to the spirits of the land.

What are the land spirits or spirits of the land?

Our ancestors used to believe in the concept of animism. Which is the belief that even inanimate objects have a soul or spirit. That includes the land. Many of their traditions, rituals, and relationship with the land, are a direct result of their folklore or beliefs that were passed down from generation to generation.

Since delving into the beliefs of our ancestors before Christianity, I am of like mind that there are indeed land spirits. Spirits of the land were the guardians of the land and were respected and honored.

Introduction to the Spirits of the Land

Since we are for sure this land will be ours, I went to the property for the first formal welcoming of introducing myself to the spirits of the land. In addition, I said words for Mother Earth, Father Sky, the ancestors of place, nature spirits, gods & goddesses, and the winds. I explained that I would like to join myself in partnership with them and help take care of the land and have a relationship with them.

The impression I received is that they were perfectly happy left to their own devices and didn’t need someone intruding. I felt like I needed to go slow with this relationship and give it lots of time. Also, I explained that we need a place to live, and no matter where we humans go we have to live on land that a spirit resides on. Finally, I gave them the assurance that we would be respectful of them.

I’ll have to keep going back to get to know them before we just intrude.

Importance

The ancient lore of our ancestors and their beliefs have been following me around for a number of years. While learning about Druidry and the Proto-Indo-European religion, I was introduced to the concept of the spirits of the land. This relationship with the land spirits was important for their survival. As their survival depended on cooperation and deep knowledge with the elements.

Since this is a new beginning for us as a family, I thought it was the perfect time to document this newly forming relationship with the land and all the spirits residing here.

Remember, long ago, our ancestors believed in these concepts very much. Throughout this blog, I will explain some of the folklore of our ancestors.

Sit back and enjoy reading.
